Big Name Acoustic

Big Name Acoustic

Alex Lifeson is unquestionably one of the greatest living legends of guitar.  He is also considered by many (including his bandmate Geddy Lee) to be one of the most underrated players alive today.  Don't believe me?  Check out this great aftershow episode of That Metal Show featuring Geddy Lee and John Petrucci talking all things songwriting and prog music, and of course some cool insight to how their creative process works:

With a super melodic approach to writing, plus a talent for effectively using beautiful arpeggios, Alex Lifeson has helped Rush establish THE sound that fans around the world have craved for over 40 years.  As is usually the case with an artist of this caliber, Alex has had the honor of having several pieces of legendary gear created with his name adorned on them.

While he has a massive list of awesome gear, one of the most obvious staple pieces of gear with the Lifeson name on it is his stunning PRS Private Stock Alex Lifeson Acoustic.  This guitar is just out of this world epic.  Featuring Peruvian Mahogany on the neck, Paua veneer purfling, plus a European Bearclaw Spruce top paired with a Koa body, this is a recipe of the ultimate sweet-tooth guitar.  I mean, these woods are just insanely nice by themselves, and Alex has them all in this one of a kind guitar, pictured below:

The only problem for mortal musicians is that we don't usually have the $10k laying around to buy this amazing guitar.  But it's not everyday you see a thinline acoustic from PRS like this is it?  Well, thanks to PRS and Alex, they have put their heads together to create an SE version of this Private Stock masterpiece at a price point that is hard to believe! [read under $1000]

If you look above, you'll notice the two guitars side by side, and the SE on the bottom, is strikingly similar to the Private Stock guitar.  While this guitar does involve more common "conventional" woods like mahogany, it STILL boasts the more exotic woods like its Private Stock brother such as full Dao wood comprising the gorgeous back and sides paired with a spruce top!

These more exotic tone-woods will give you an acoustic that stands out from the crowd of traditional acoustics costing far more.  The thinline body will give you tones that are more focused and precise- which lead to a guitar that is more comfortable to hold and sounds great plugged in (without all that nasty and boxy low harmonic hum). Interestingly, and awesome for us guitarists, PRS uses the same bracing technology in the SE as they did on the Private Stock guitar which creates the amazing resonance of the instrument.

Alex had the following to say about his new SE acoustic:

"I was very pleased when PRS presented me with my SE Angelus acoustic, a beautiful guitar of stunning quality.  It was in response to the challenge of building a guitar that shared the integrity and attention to detail that the Alex Lifeson Private Stock Angelus possesses in a package more broadly accessible. The SE Alex Lifeson Thinline is that model. Carefully selected materials, expert craftsmanship and a smart approach to concept resulted in a guitar that is beautiful to look at and rewarding to play."

Want to know why Alex decided to go with the smaller, thinner body?  He explains it here:

If you are interested in picking one of these up for yourself you can get them for only $800 and they will be arriving to dealers in early August.
