F12-SESSION 006 // FRIKO
Spanning post-punk, early-2000s indie, and a tinge of emo, it’s tough to pigeonhole Friko to just one genre — but if there’s a single, unifying feature of Friko’s tracks, it’s that they demand to be scream-shouted in a frenzied, sweat-drenched crowd. These are raw, galloping anthems of catharsis — gripping lyrics and sweeping riffs transmuting the emotion you’re carrying into pure, unbridled energy. See for yourself in this FRET12 Session, where Friko performs highlights off their new record Where we’ve been, Where we go from here, including “Where We’ve Been,” “Crashing Through,” “Get Numb To It!," and “For Ella.”
After the performances, we sat down with Friko to talk post-sound-check walks, creative pursuits outside music, and figuring out what a song is asking for when you’re making it.

“Everybody put everything into [the new album] and it feels like a special record from that point of view — that it came from a specific group of people. Friends, the Chicago scene...it wouldn’t have been possible without the community.”
– Niko Kapetan & Bailey Minzenberger

“With this record, we were more playing to each song, rather than ‘oh, let’s try to make it sound like Friko’...it was more ‘What is this song asking for?”

HARD-WON TOUR TIPS
💥 “FaceTiming friends and partners — it helps us stay grounded. Group meditations, too.”
💥 “Having a really good sleeping setup...that’s the only thing that’s truly consistent, your sleeping bag stays the same, your cot stays the same.”
💥 “Try to find a trail, or some sort of nature. You’re out in concrete 95% of time, so it's kind of nice to, for lack of a better word, touch grass.”
💥 “One of my favorite ways to get to know cities is just walking through the neighborhoods.”
“Now when we’re making stuff, we know if something feels right — is it us or if it’s not us — which is probably the most important thing as a band.”

“This is my favorite pedal I've ever owned, the Reverberation Machine [by Death By Audio]. I started using it for guitar because I like this really cool, dusty kind of distorted reverb... there are a lot of songs in Ganser where I use distorted vocals. It’s just a sound I’ve always wanted for vocals and it’s much more fun to perform as well.”
