F12-SESSION 003 // READY FOR DEATH
Just off a packed-house show opening for Sunn O))) at the legendary Thalia Hall, Ready For Death is a Chicago-based thrash metal band that cannibalizes the best elements of hardcore, death metal, punk, and more to create a crushing, all-consuming sound that’s all their own. Though a relatively new band, they have a deep heavy music history, with members having played in Milhouse, Racetraitor, Pelican, Luggage, and Asschapel. Which explains how effortlessly they tore the roof off our shop with performances of “Worldwide Blackout,” Wasteland of Peace,” and “Cannibal Cops.”
Post-performance, we sat down with Ready For Death to talk about their upcoming record, which builds upon the concepts of planetary war, religion, and a post-apocalyptic future the band explored on their debut.

"Artie and I met through our wives [and kids]...we started looking through each other’s records and were like, “damn, you know who Neurosis is?” If you have kids, and your kids make a friend, and then you’ve got stuff in common with their parents, it’s like....wait! It’s like, the [normal parents] are nice, but... they don’t know who Judas Priest is. So we started talking music.”

"It’s kind of terrifying though, because
an 80’s B-movie is becoming our reality...maybe this isn't funny anymore and we are ready for death, and the AI robots are going to take us over anyway."

“I toured for almost two years straight. I feel like in 2024 we don’t really need to do the punishing Black Flag style touring all year around. You can if you’re built for it. But you can also do little week or two-week jaunts, and the Internet empowers you to reach people that you might not been able to reach and you don’t have to put yourself through that.”

[The Astral Destiny pedal by Earthquaker Devices] feels to me like a blend of an octave pedal with a delay pedal, which is exactly my zone...One song you’ll definitely hear it on is the leads in Worldwide Blackout, as well as some of the new songs that aren’t out yet...I’m massively impressed with that pedal, it captures the ambient vibe I want to get on my leads live.”

HARD-WON TOUR TIPS
💥 “Maybe do 6 weeks throughout the year [of touring] and do a lot of social media, content, and don’t get burned out. Pace yourself!”
💥 “Don’t be in a band with assholes. If you’re in a band with cool guys, it’s like you’re having a good time. And if the shows suck, even if the audience sucked, and the city sucked, you’re with good friends and having a good laugh”
💥 “Even if there’s five people at the show, there’s five people that are there to see you, so you play to them. That’s what you gotta do.”
