With the absolutely crushing success of Record Store Day’s Black Friday sale almost 5 months ago, the real deal is finally upon us! We’ve already talked about some of the releases here, including the Slayer single that will be released, the Metallica cassette, and the list of speculations that ended up being true, but considering the fact that Record Store Day is tomorrow (April 18th), it seemed right to give everyone a little friendly reminder of all the awesome releases that are coming this year!
First, a bit of background info for anyone who may not know what Record Store Day is all about (any vinyl veterans can go ahead and scroll down). Record Store day is, and has been since 2007, a day of celebration for music and the culture of record stores. It’s essentially a kind of Christmas for music fans, where people come from all over to purchase the gifts of exclusive vinyl releases, along with seeing some bands play, and socializing with other music fans. The reason this is such a big deal, however, is the exclusive vinyl releases, and this year is definitely no exception.
NOTABLE RELEASES FOR RSD 2015:
A reissue of the often forgotten Doors record, now recut from the original masters. It’s often overshadowed by it’s predecessor, The Doors’ debut album, but all around, this is definitely a reissue worthy of purchase.
For folk music fans, this is definitely something you should look out for. The record was recorded in 1967 at Woodstock, and is made up of songs that were only able to be found on bootlegs, in the past
With Dave Grohl being the official ambassador of Record Store Day, it’d be a little strange if the Foo Fighters didn’t get their own release. That wasn’t the case, however, as they have this limited edition 10” for sale, featuring 2 demos, a cover, and a previously unreleased track
A release that the late David Brockie could definitely be proud of… The legendary shock-metal band’s third release is given new life on a 45RPM double LP, now featuring pop-up-book style designs. UNOFFICIAL WARNING: Pop up art on record sleeves has a tendency to warp records when wrapped in cellophane afterwards. The pop up art tend to create an unnatural bulge in the middle of the sleeve, and if it’s too tightly wrapped, it can warp records.
On a beautiful picture disc and featuring artwork from Brent Hinds; what more could you want?? The song, once only available via Adult Swim’s Single Series and Gibby Waynes from Butthole Surfers pulling vocal work
That damn mystery release! Record Store Day’s website only offers this description:
“It's a mystery! No peeking! art of Rhino's now celebrated RSD exclusive Side By Side 7" singles series. Two artists perform the same song. Surprising and unusual performances and repertoire.”
The first Swans 12” ever! If you like noise, this is definitely the record for you. Michael Gira’s effort to start the no-wave scene, which, obviously, was a complete success. Maybe not as brutal as some of the other Swans releases, but definitely an intense listen
The post-punk legends made an amazing comeback with their newest record, Citizen Zombie, they’ve now announced another EP full of new material for RSD! (probably featuring a few songs that just weren’t able to fit on the record)
And, there you have it folks! There may very well be a few releases that you may enjoy that aren’t listed here, so definitely make sure to check out the full list of releases for something else you may like! Be sure to turn out tomorrow, check out some bands, meet some people, and pick up some amazing releases for yourself!
