Music documentaries have definitely been rising in popularity in recent years, and have been pretty much necessary for any influential band or artist. Kurt Cobain’s newest documentary, directed by Brent Morgen, was released a few days ago on HBO, There’s a metric ton of kickstarter-funded docs on the way, and we’ve got our own Jim Root Sound and Story part 2 coming. Now, another kickstarter documentary has reached full funding, and it’s quite an interesting one: The Colossus of Destiny, A Melvins Tale! That’s right, a full length documentary about everyone’s favorite sludge legends, The Melvins.
The Kickstarter for this project was was launched 2 months ago on March 9th, and officially ended on April 9th with nearly $100,000 raised, when the project had set a goal of only $75,000. Now that the project has reached full funding, it is anticipated to come out sometime in early 2016. As for why this documentary is significant, the makers of the film put it best on their kickstarter page for the project:
“Well, no one has ever tried or thought it even possible.....until now that is. The Colossus Of Destiny - A Melvins Tale is a film about a band who have defied all the rules, for over 32 years and counting, and still managed to succeed and do it their own way. The journey of band members King Buzzo and Dale Crover leads us from the backwards-waters of the Chehalis River in Washington State, down through the Golden Gate of Northern California, and finally settling into the Los Angeles River Basin of Southern California. With the rest of the world thrown in along the way. You will witness first hand the beliefs and attitudes, values and obscenities, slows and fasts, triumphs and toils, loves and hates, wits and giggles of a hugely talented and influential band. And you will also come away with a lesson in how to survive in the wicked world of the music biz without taking yourself too damn seriously.”
Not only are they making the documentary seem promising, but just take a look at these amazing graphics for the doc as well:
You can also watch the preview trailer, along with other videos (including a clip of the band playing golf) on the project's kickstarter page
Soon, we may get some of the closest insight into the minds of some of the most influential figures in Sludge and metal in general! It’ll definitely be worth it just to hear king Buzzo telling stories about the early days of the band. Look forward to the documentary coming out early next year…
