Last year, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted’s project was “shut down” after their hardcore touring effort. It started with the band canceling their appearance at Australia’s Soundwave fest for private and personal reasons, and since that time, there hasn’t been much news about the state of the band. Speaking to New Jersey’s WDHA-FM 105.5 FM in early November, Mike Mushok, Newsted’s guitarist said:
"The [Newsted] thing really kind of… [Jason] kind of shut it down after we did that run [and] we did that record. So he's kind of just taking a little break now."
"I think it was… You know, we went out, we did the record, and we did, like, 75 dates around the world in, like… I don't even know… in a really, really quick time, that whole thing did. And it was really just kind of such a whirlwind. And, you know, things have changed since… from back in the day, and I think [Jason] was just… he was happy to get that record out. I know he's still writing music and we still talk, but there's not really any plans as far as that goes today."
This is bad news for a lot of people, as the Metal EP and Heavy Metal Music were both quite good releases, and showed a lot of potential. Hopefully we might be able to hear more from the band in the future.
On top of that, though, Newsted’s website has been stripped down to only include this statement:
"Jason Newsted is not on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or any other social networking website as of September 15, 2014 & and has no affiliation with any such impostor sites using his name or likeness unlawfully."
It’s very strange, considering how open Newsted was to using social Media in the past. It's also very strange that the whole website has been replaced with this. It seems like this might be a definitive end to this Newsted project, despite Mushok's statements? Hopefully not, but only time will tell.
